CASE TOKYO is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition The Needle of Blood by Toshiya Murakoshi from September 14 until October 5. This will be Murakoshi’s third exhibition at CASE Tokyo and feature 23 photographs taken during a period of five years following the Great Eastern Japan Disaster in March 2011.

Murakoshi, a Tokyo-based photographer born in Sukagawa in Fukushima prefecture, has begun to focus on his home prefecture in 2006. In the tranquil and powerful landscapes surrounding his birth town, Murakoshi goes in search of past experiences and memories. Driven by the will to document his family and his home, the series The Needle of Blood was created during several visits and is, in the artist’s own words, somewhat similar to a “family album.” Murakoshi describes his approach of photographing in and around his hometown as “pursuing whatever is left at the end, after I scrape off all and everything I had been born with.”

We invite you to take a look at the artist’s latest works, about an embroidery called “family,” stitched with the needle of blood.

With the needle of blood, passed down through generations, we spin the yarn of our lives and add to the embroidery we call family. In my photographs I preserve my memory of our family as a document of a family of one particular region. -Toshiya Murakoshi
